Corgi, Cheese! · The story
From Soviet Electronics to Corgi, Cheese!
An old game, a new life
In the 1980s, «Ну, погоди!» (Nu, Pogodi!), also known as the Elektronika IM-02, became one of the most beloved handheld games in the Soviet Union. Inspired by Nintendo’s Game & Watch Egg, it featured the famous cartoon Wolf catching eggs from four directions on a simple LCD screen. Its primitive graphics and electronic beeps hid surprisingly clever gameplay.
Rediscovering the original
I wasn’t the first to explore how this little machine worked. Igor Rychenkov (IgorR76) had already done remarkable reverse-engineering work, reconstructing the original microcontroller’s behavior and developing an accurate emulator. Reading his research, along with old schematics and technical documentation, gave me a foundation for understanding the game’s internal logic.
But I didn’t want to create yet another exact replica. I wanted to bring the experience into a new era, preserving its distinctive timing, movement, scoring, and difficulty mechanics while giving it my own characters, artwork, and personality.
Meet Sherlock and Matisse
The Wolf became Sherlock, my fluffy, cheese-loving corgi. The eggs became cheese, and the Hare’s role went to Matisse, a mischievous Maine Coon.
The result is Corgi, Cheese! — a modern interpretation of a childhood classic, built around the original game’s carefully reconstructed logic, but with an entirely new look and character.
Four baskets. One hungry corgi. And just one more game.
